After three years, the construction management team of Robins & Morton, Cumming, and Brownstone Construction has completed the new Medical University of South Carolina Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion. The team provided construction management services and support throughout the hospital’s $385 million development.

With construction finishing on the new 625,000-square-foot facility, the hospital will begin its phased, strategic transition throughout the fall. The Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion is a new, high-end facility focused on the advanced and specialized needs of pediatric tertiary and quaternary cases in South Carolina and the Low Country region.

Integrating children’s care with obstetrical services, the hospital and pavilion include an 11-story bed tower, six-story diagnostic and treatment building, and will house approximately 250 patient beds. The Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion also houses the state’s only level 4 neonatal intensive care unit, a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit, a large labor and delivery unit, a special care nursery, advanced maternal fetal care center and specialized children’s emergency services.

The project was funded through a combination of special state dollars, private donations, and the FHA 241/ 242 (HUD) Hospital Mortgage Insurance Program. The structure was built to meet the region’s seismic zone conditions and designed to meet hurricane force wind requirements by Perkins+Will.
