Construction has officially started on a new Student Health & Counseling Services Building at California State University, San Marcos.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday for the 20,000-square-foot facility that is designed to meet LEED  Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The two-story center will house student examination rooms, medical offices and counseling spaces, and provide a central area for the Health and Wellness program.

Construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 2014. According to the university’s website, the total project cost is $9.5 million, with $7.5 million going toward construction. Funding for the Student Health & Counseling Services center is coming from student fees.

San Diego-based Cumming, an international project management and cost consulting firm, has teamed up with Fred Saldana of fs3 for project and construction management responsibilities and oversee all aspects of the project.

HMC Architects and C.W. Driver are serving as the project’s design-build team.
