SAN DIEGO – (March 28, 2013) – The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Southern California Chapter awarded a 2013 Project Achievement Award to Cumming, an international project management and cost consulting firm, for its work with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) on its new Middle College High School. The 2013 award – under the category Design-Build, $11 – $50 million – was presented to the construction management firm at CMAA’s Annual Awards Banquet.
Maintaining schedule and budgeting excellence while overcoming several challenges as the Owner’s Authorized Representative, Cumming led the new LEED Platinum and CA-CHPS certified Middle College High School throughout all phases of development. The project was completed on August 13, 2012.
Middle College High School faced several challenges beginning during the design phase. First, the new building was to be placed within the already master planned site. Additionally, the project was required to conform to multiple sustainability guidelines, be sited around fault zones running through the campus, and follow design and construction procedures imposed by both Los Angeles Unified School District and Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). Despite these difficulties, the Cumming team delivered the new facility – the first major joint project between LAUSD and LACCD – utilizing the design-build delivery method. The entire project – from concept to completion – was completed in just 29 months.
“Earning the trust and respect over our 10-plus year relationship with both LAUSD and LACCD allowed our Education Sector experts to truly work together as one effective unit with the leadership from both districts,” said Peter Heald, President at Cumming. The presenting award organization, CMAA, is North America’s only association dedicated exclusively to the interests of professional Construction and Program Management. The Association was formed in 1982 and currently has more than 10,000 members nationwide, including individual CM/PM practitioners, corporate members, and construction owners in both public and private sectors, along with academic and associate members.
