SAN MARCOS — A new student health and counseling services building will break ground this summer at Cal State San Marcos.

The 20,000-square-foot, two-story building will include student examination rooms, medical offices and counseling spaces, as well as provide a home base for the university’s health and wellness program.

It’s expected to be completed in fall 2014.

The current student health and counseling services building is housed off campus in leased space.

Cumming, an international project management and cost consulting firm headquartered in San Diego, will be providing construction management services for the $10 million project. Builders C.W. Driver will serve as the contractor and HMC Architects as the design partner.

The project is seeking LEED Gold certification at completion.

In October 2012 Cumming, in association with fs3|Hodges, was selected as one of two approved construction managers to provide as-needed services on future worked planned for the campus over the next three to five years.

The student health and counseling services building is Cumming’s first assigned project to be competitively awarded.

“It’s really special because it’s our first one showing them what we can do for them,” said Peter Heald, president of Cumming, which opened in 1996.

Heald said more than half of the company’s portfolio is in the education sector, with about $10 billion worth of work done throughout the continental U.S. and Hawaii.

The company also does projects in the hospitality, themed entertainment and healthcare sectors.
