Sarah Lawrence College, Barbara Walters Campus Center
Located at the heart of campus, the Barbara Walters Campus Center serves as a vibrant hub for intellectual, cultural, and social engagement at Sarah Lawrence College. Its program elements include multi-purpose space, dining, student meeting areas, and a gallery and archive dedicated to Barbara Walters, an alumna of the college. The center functions as both a geographic focal point and a welcoming front door to campus, offering a variety of formal and informal gathering areas for students.
Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the project, reflected in features such as a green roof, LED lighting, and a highly insulated building envelope. The project also included significant sitescape improvements, including five satellite parking areas and an amphitheater designed to support outdoor programming and events.
Cumming Group joined the effort at inception and provided full-time Project Management services from early planning through construction closeout and turnover to campus operations. We assisted Sarah Lawrence College with team selection—including architect, engineering, and construction partners—and played a central role in aligning the project’s cash flow with institutional funding milestones. Our team also led community engagement efforts, acting as liaison not only with campus stakeholders but also with the village of Bronxville to secure public support and consensus.
This project showcases our ability to manage a complex, multi-use facility while preserving the campus character and enhancing student life.
