SAN MARCOS — Cal State San Marcos and construction management firm Cumming celebrated the groundbreaking of the university’s Student Health and Counseling Services Building on June 18.

Attendees included University President Karen S. Haynes, medical director Dr. Karen Nicholson, Vice President of Student Affairs Lorena Meza, and Cumming director Debbie Murray.

The 20,000-square-foot, two-story building will be next to Parking Structure One at Campus Way and Campus View Drive. The university currently has health and counseling services off campus. The state-of-the-art, $9.5 million project, designed by HMC Architects, is funded through student fees. The facility will meet CSUSM’s high green-building standards, with numerous energy- and water-saving features, officials said.

The building will have exam rooms, medical offices, a lab, a pharmacy, and counseling spaces. It will be home to the Health and Wellness program.

It is expected to be completed in fall 2014.
