A8 Belfast to Larne Dual Carriageway, Belfast, Northern Ireland

The A8 links Belfast and the port of Larne, and is a strategically important route in Northern Ireland which carries in excess of 17,000 vehicles per day. Due to projected growth in traffic levels and the consequential increase in traffic congestion and deterioration of road safety, the dualling of the A8 between the M2 at Glengormley and Larne was seen as an important project to alleviate these concerns.

The project addressed congestion issues by upgrading the single lane carriageway between B95 Colemans Corner and the junction with the B100 (Ballyrickard Road) to dual carriageway standard; a 14.4km stretch consisting of both on-line and off-line construction. Other works included:

  • 8km of ancillary roads.
  • 1nr grade separated junction.
  • 4nr compact grade separated junctions.
  • 2nr roundabouts.
  • 8nr bridge structures.
