IAAM (International African American Museum), Charleston, SC

In 2019, Cumming Group was hired by the City of Charleston to provide project management services for the International African American Museum (IAAM), the mission of which is to tell the untold stories of the African American journey. Completed in 2022, the IAAM is located at the site of the Old Gadsden’s Wharf, which was a major entry point for enslaved Africans arriving in the United States. The museum presents this history in an unvarnished way, while also commemorating and celebrating the role that Africans and their descendants have played in the making of America, as well as their connections around the world. The museum features immersive, interactive exhibits for all ages and includes the Center for Family History, a leading genealogy archive that will help visitors identify their individual threads in the complex tapestry of history.

The IAAM contains 22,280 sq. ft. of dynamic exhibit space, 10,175 sq. ft. of support and research space, and 7,610 sq. ft. of office and mechanical maintenance areas. The nearly 2.5-acre site also features the African Ancestors Memorial Garden, a place for visitors to quietly reflect while experiencing the lush botanical gardens, artistic cultural installations, and large infinity fountain.
