Jewish Theological Seminary – 21st Century Campus, New York, NY

The 21st Century Campus project is multi-faceted, comprising of three projects – make ready, library demolition, and an 88,000 sq. ft. new building – each with different design and construction teams. The demolition of the existing library required the relocation of the boiler room and construction of a new mechanical room to replace the library building’s cooling tower.

The new building will consist of academic space, a 200-seat auditorium, conference space, library, and a five story, 144-bed residence hall. The new state-of-the-art library will house both JTS’s circulating library and its world-class rare books collection. The JTS library houses the largest and most extensive collection of Hebraic and Judaic materials in the Western Hemisphere, with 425,000+ volumes, which requires specialized climate control systems.

The project was enabled through the sale of a defined lot of land at the eastern edge of its campus to Savanna, a New York-based real estate investment and development firm. The proceeds from this sale have allowed JTS to re-imagine and modernize its campus to meet the needs of current and future generations. The project was completed in 2021.
