The development of Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s District-wide Plan for Sustainability was the product of collaborative efforts between the Board of Education, facility staff, educators, students, parents, and community members. Cumming Group spearheaded the year-long plan development process in three main phases: Community Engagement, Sustainability Assessment, and Plan Development. The Plan framework centered on eight focus areas: Climate and Resiliency (with a special focus on resiliency due to recent wildfires); Education and Engagement; Energy Efficiency and Renewables; Water; Solid Waste; Transportation; Food, Nutrition, and Wellness; and Green Building and Operations. The Plan was approved by the SMMUSD Board in March 2019, and is currently in the implementation phase. SMMUSD received the prestigious Sustainable Quality Award for Excellence at the 2019 Santa Monica Sustainable Quality Awards ceremony.
