Project Update: Mountain View Community Center
The Mountain View Community Center reopened this past February, following the expansion and renovation of the aging building. The 22,000-sq.-ft. community center included 13,000 sq. ft. of complete renovation, 9,000 sq. ft. of new construction, and achieved LEED Gold certification. Cumming managed the preconstruction/construction phases and provided cost management and LEED commissioning services for the project.
Starting in 2014, city officials began working on upgrading the center, a project that required about $23.5 million and nearly 18 months of construction. Along with providing a new home for various clubs and classes, the new community center now also serves as the headquarters for the city’s recreation staff. Cumming worked with the City and designers to manage scheduling, review designs, estimate costs, and affect design changes to keep the renovation and addition within budget.
The new upgrades include a 13,000 sq.-ft. expansion and remodel of the building, the original structure of which remains. The expansion includes two new fitness and dance rooms along with four multi-purpose rooms, which are intended mainly for use by outside groups. At the back of the center is a new classroom for the city’s preschool programs. Throughout the building, a variety of new murals and art commissioned by the City are also on display.
The centerpiece of the new design is the “Redwood Room,” which consists of a 7,000-sq.-ft. social hall with space for 250 people, an adjoining kitchen, and a patio overlooking the park lawn. The social hall is intended for large events like weddings, banquets, or corporate retreats, and can be booked by the public for events.
