South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) (at left) was among the dignitaries on hand recently for the dedication of the Medical University of South Carolina’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion in Charleston. With the project team of Robins & Morton, Cumming and Brownstone Construction having recently completed work on the $385-million, 625,000-sq-ft facility, the hospital will begin its phased, strategic transition throughout the fall. Integrating children’s care with obstetrical services, the new facility includes an 11-story bed tower, six-story diagnostic and treatment building, and approximately 250 patient beds. The facility also houses the state’s only Level-4 neonatal intensive care unit, a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit, a large labor and delivery unit, a special care nursery, advanced maternal fetal care center and specialized children’s emergency services.
Overcoming a six-month permit delay at the start of the project, Kaufman Lynn Construction was able to complete work on the Don Soffer Aventura High School in just over one year, enabling the 53,418-sq-ft school campus to open in time for the start of the 2019 school year. To overcome the initial delay, the contractor accelerated the site’s schedule while overcoming hurdles such as protecting wetland mangroves on site, coordinating activities with the Gulf Stream racetrack adjacent to the new school as well as renovating the park next to the campus. Located in Aventura, Fla., the complex also includes a 10,448-sq-ft gymnasium. PGAL Architects of Boca Raton was the project’s architect. The school is a municipal charter school managed by Charter Schools USA Inc. and governed by the city of Aventura. “Completing the building ahead of schedule has allowed these students to have the stability of knowing that they will not have to switch schools in the middle of the school year,” said Ronald Wasson, Aventura city manager.
