Matt Murphy, Co-op

Boston, MA / Wentworth Institute of Technology
How did you learn about our internship program?

After joining Linkedin and wanting to make a few industry connections, I spoke with Fort Point to start with a simple informational interview. Their life science focus grabbed my attention quickly, and I thought project management would be a great starting point for my career.

How did you learn about the AEC industry?

When I started this internship, I was fresh off my estimating class I took sophomore year. But, I didn’t know the cost estimating portion could be separated from the entire estimating process until I researched Cumming further. I found that Cumming was part of the cost management portion of 1 Dalton in Boston, MA, which was a project I was following long before I was even out of high school!

What are hoping to achieve with your internship?

I am excited to learn firsthand! During the pandemic, most of my classes were online. So, coming into this position I was excited to finally get out from behind my computer screen and visit sites, go to the office, etc.

What projects are you currently working on?
  • Lab equipment relocation at Takeda Pharmaceuticals
  • Furniture and employee relocation at Brown University
  • Project manager support for Fresenius Medical Care
  • Pivot tables and organization for Biogen
What are your career goals for the future?

I honestly don’t know what I want my final goals to be, which is why I am taking in as much as I can through this internship and asking for as much exposure as possible. Every new task is a new learning possibility.

What is your favorite part of your internship with Cumming Group thus far?

My favorite part of this entire experience is having real responsibilities with a team, and the learning aspect of it all. But most of all, the environment is amazing. Through school, if I have a question on a homework question or a life question in general, emailing a professor will take a day (if they respond at all). Even though I am only here for a couple of months, my team members will drop what they are doing to help me through this process. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for them. I can happily call them friends, and I can’t wait to stay in touch after my internship comes to an end.
